It's not much, and there are two people with what looks like no shoes headed down the road. It made me reallise that the vast expanse of land that looks nothing more than a forgotten stretch of land was once prosperous fields. It makes me think that rural areas suffered just as much as urban spots.

Compared to other pictures the men here look like downright millionaires. They seem to be living the life in a nice compound or base of some sort.
7. If i could i would ask the photographer if he happened to live there and if it was very nice compared to what other people went through. Also, i would ask him what inspired to take az picture of the men eating dinner rather than doing another something.
Jordyn Beschel This picture was taken in Eutaw, Alabama during the Great Depression. It takes place outside during the day on a plantation. There are two people, a man and a woman, both farmers and of African descent. They both are wearing tatty clothing. There are not many other houses or businesses around them. The chances that these two workers were forced into labor are high. What catches my eye first is the man. Although his head is facing toward his work, you can get the sense that he is miserable. Alone from the two discontent workers, the fact that this plantation is in “the middle of nowhere” gives this photograph in general a negative feeling. This picture does not set an enjoyable mood. As you can see, the workers aren’t very joyous either. They were more than likely forced into labor, or working for little money. By their clothing, you can see they aren’t very wealthy. If I had the chance, I would ask one of the two workers, “How much money are you being paid for this, if any at all?” I would also ask, “How long have you had to work like this to maintain an adequate lifestyle?”
This picture is of an African American family during the Great Depression. It takes place outdoors in the daylight. You can tell that this family is not very wealthy because of their shabby clothing and worn-out house. I counted eight people in this photo—two adults, three adolescents, and three children. While looking at this picture, I don’t feel sorry for this family because they look a little content on their own. They do not look as miserable as the working man and woman did. I think that they are grateful for having somewhat of a home rather than living on the streets, and also that they are still with their family. I can tell that this takes place during the Great Depression because the house is dilapidated and they are wearing thin cloths for cover-up. Although they are on the poor side, they do not look too unhappy. If I was with this family, I would ask them, “Does living on the farm help you or hurt you economically?” I would also ask them, “Are you satisfied with where and how you are living now compared to others, both wealthier and less fortunate?
This picture is of a group of cadets coming home for dinner. There are about 9 cadets captured in this room, all about in their 20’s. All the men are Caucasian. The house seems like a serene, country-like home. It’s daytime. When I look at this picture, I get a sense of happiness. As you can see, the cadets in this photo are feeling bright and joyous now that they are visiting home for a hearty dinner. The tone of this photo is definitely positive. If I were with them, I would most likely ask them, “How long are you home for?” I would also ask them, “Is there any cadets of African American descent?”
Jenny Taing 1. Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected. This particular picture was taken in May 1941. The photographer of it is Jack Delano. 2. What is the setting of the photograph? The setting of the photograph is outdoors on their front porch. There is moderate lighting and they seem to be in a rural area. It looks like it’s about 5 in the afternoon in this picture on a cloudy day.
3. Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details. In this picture I see four African American people. One is cut out so I can only their body. There is a woman in the back who looks to be the mother by her height and older looking face. In the front are two kids, a girl and a boy. The girl is older than the boy, shown by how she is taller than the boy. The girl looks to be around 13 years old and the boy looks to be around 10 or 11 years old. The mother looks like she’s in her early 40s. Their clothing is disheveled and stained. They look worn with age. A distinguishing feature is how they’re all looking away from the camera. The first thing that catches my eye is the boy in front hugging the pole. 4. What structures are in the photograph? In the picture there is a wooden house in which they’re standing in front of. The house looks to be slightly shabby. In this picture you cannot see what surrounds the structure. 5. What is the tone of the photograph? The tone of the photograph is heavy, negative, and dark. 6. Write a paragraph explaining your response to this photograph. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer. This photograph just makes me want to go back in time and give these poor people a hug. From the photograph it looks like they’ve been having a hard time during this era indicated by their tired unsmiling expressions, and their dirty clothes. It has a very gloomy atmosphere to it. 7. Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s). I question I would ask the photographer is what was he feeling when he took this picture of a African American family who didn’t seem to be very happy. Another question I would ask is how he came across this family.
1. Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected. This picture was taken in July 1936 by Lange, Dorothea.
2. What is the setting of the photograph? This picture was taken outdoors during the day in a rural area. It looks to be late morning.
3. Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details. There are two African American people in this photo. One is an adult and the other is a child. I cannot tell the age of the adult woman because her back is towards us, but the child looks young, maybe around 9 years old. Their clothes are simple and slightly dirty. A distinguishing feature is how both are not wearing shoes, and the lady hoeing catches my eye first.
4. What structures are in the photograph? There are no structures in this photograph because it was taken in a field.
5. What is the tone of the photograph? The tone of the photograph is heavy, negative, and light (dark?)
6. Write a paragraph explaining your response to this photograph. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer. This picture makes me feel sorry for the people who had to work so hard to make a living. Even the little child has to work. It looks like hard work and very tiring.
7. Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s). One question I would ask the photographer is if he told the woman he was taking a picture, for she is not facing the camera and that seems odd to me. Another question I would ask is what was his purpose for taking this picture.
1. Write a complete bibliographic entry for the photograph you have selected. This picture was taken May 1941 by Delano, Jack.
2. What is the setting of the photograph? The setting is outdoors on the front porch of a house in a rural area. The lighting is not bright. It seems to be maybe around mid afternoon on a cloudy day.
3. Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details. In this particular photo there are two people sitting on the porch. Both are of the African American nationality. One is a lady, who looks to be the mother. Another is a small child, although it is too dark in the picture to indentify what age or gender they are. They are both wearing thin clothes that would be good for a hot day. One distinguishing feature is how there is no door. The woman standing by the doorframe catches my eye first.
4. What structures are in the photograph? There is a house is the photograph belonging to the lady and child. It looks to be in good condition other than how there is no door. It is surrounded by trees and telegraph lines. There is another small house behind it.
5. What is the tone of the photograph? The tone of the photograph is heavy, negative, and dark.
6. Write a paragraph explaining your response to this photograph. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer. When I see the photograph it makes me want to go back in time and see what it is to live in that house. From this photo it looks like they have a pretty okay life, but from the clothes they are wearing you can tell that it’s not the best. Also living out in a rural area like this must get really boring. 7.Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
If I could ask the photographer questions one I would ask is who is the lady in the picture. Just seeing her and the child makes me wonder if she has a husband to help her. Another question I would ask how many rooms this house has. From the angle this picture is taken you can vaguely make out how big it is, but its hard to imagine the inside. Delaney Cassidy 1.
